Location & Trip Earning Data

To earn coins automatically for your trips, Powour needs Location sharing set to “Always”. That lets your phone detect trips in the background — so you don’t have to remember to start anything.

At a glance

  • Used for: detecting trips, confirming transport mode, calculating coins + impact
  • Not used for: ads, selling data, or showing anyone your live location
  • You control it: you can switch it off anytime (you’ll just stop earning Powour coins)

Why Powour asks for “Always”

Why “Always” — not “While using the app”?

Trips happen when you’re not staring at Powour. “Always” allows background detection so we can:

  • automatically recognise a trip (walk / cycle / public transport)
  • award coins without manual check-ins
  • keep earning accurate and reduce gaming

If you choose “While Using,” most phones won’t reliably detect trips in the background — meaning missed trips and missed coins.

What we collect for trip earning

Powour collects only what’s needed to detect trips and award coins.

We collect

  • Trip summaries: start/end time, distance, duration, and detected mode (e.g., walk, cycle, public transport)
  • GPS location signals used to detect and verify a trip happened
  • Device movement signals (like motion/activity) that help reduce GPS use and improve accuracy

We don’t collect

  • We’re not interested in where you “hang out,” who you’re with, or what you do off the clock.
  • We do not use location data to target you with ads.

What your workplace / sponsor can see

If you’re part of a workplace pilot, your organisation receives group-level reporting (for example: participation rates, total trips, and total CO₂ saved).

They do not get your live location, and they don’t see your route history.

Battery & “Are you tracking me 24/7?”

Will this drain my battery?

Powour aims to use low‑power detection where possible and only “wake up” location when your phone thinks you’re moving. Battery impact varies by device, but we design for set and forget, not constant GPS.

Does this mean you’re tracking me all the time?

“Always” is a permission setting — it doesn’t mean we’re watching a live dot on a map. The goal is trip detection, not surveillance.

Storage, security, and deletion

How long do you keep this data?

  • Trip summaries are kept so you can see your history and we can produce reporting.
  • Any more detailed location information (if collected) is kept only for 60 days for verification/support, then deleted.

Who can access it?

Access is restricted and logged. Data is protected in transit and at rest, and only authorised staff can access it for support and system integrity.

Can I delete it?

Yes — you can request deletion of your account and associated data via the Powour app’s User Profile page.

You’re in control

  • Turn off location anytime in your phone settings (trip coins will stop).
